This is our second year working with innovator Felipe, of Finca Gascón. This time we asked him to share something special with his new processing techniques, and he brought to us the H1, a varietal that doesn't get much attention in Guatemala.
Felipe's father Gildardo Contreras grew up playing in a backyard full of coffee trees and always aspired to be a farmer himself. He bought Finca Gascon from a relative in 2012, and found that the rich volcanic soil in the high mountains of Antigua were perfect conditions for growing coffee. The farm now 54 hectares, with a wet mill on site is now run by Felipe who continues to focus on innovative processing and introducing new varietals.
The H1 varietal is a hybrid of the famed Sudan Rume, combined with a research varietal derived from a Sarchimore. This coffee possesses both the delicate floral and powerful red fruit notes of a Sudan Rume whilst maintaining a rich body! When we cupped this coffee we immediately tasted purple vibes; grape and lavender as well as red plum and dark chocolate.
