We luckily stumbled across this incredible lot from our great friend Kate Gutiérrez of Finca Monteverde, who helped aid in processing this incredible varietal and we cannot be more excited to showcase this minuscule nano lot with you!
Olger Rogel & Magda Zabala are pioneers in cultivating insanely rare and unique varietals out of a small town La Perla, Quito based in the northwest outskirts of Ecuador. Over the last few years, they have been working on some unique varietals such as Mokka, Eugenioides, Wush-Wush and Sudan Rume. We're incredibly privileged to secure the entire crop of their mokka harvest processed as a dry natural.
What makes this Mokka (sometimes referred to as Mocha or Moka) varietal so unique is its size and being originated from Yemen; it is one of the oldest coffee varieties known. It is a short tree with small cherries and leaves, and its productivity is incredibly low. Mokka is a mutation of Typica that is typically grown in Brazil and Hawaii. It was previously believed to be a separate species, but now its belonging to C. Arabica has been confirmed through genetic tests: Mokka displays four pairs of chromosomes, as is common to C. Arabica plants. But for us what makes this varietal unique is its intense sweetness and complexity, making it one of our favourite varietals!
With only 6kg produced this is one rare and unique chance for you to taste this varietal. Expect intense white sugary notes, white chocolate, juicy watermelon, finished off with peach iced tea. Thank you to Olger, Magda and the team for allowing us to share this incredible coffee with you!
